Cryopreservation Nairobi, Kenya

Cryopreservation refers to preserving biological specimens at cryogenic temperatures below 150 degrees Celsius for extended periods. It is commonly used for many medical applications, including procedures related to reproductive health, such as sperm freezing, egg freezing and embryo freezing.

Techniques for Cryopreservation

Sperm Freezing

Sperm freezing can be done for a variety of reasons. Suppose an individual undergoes surgery or treatment leading to low fertility or infertility. In that case, they can opt for sperm freezing, also known as sperm banking, to allow them to produce offspring through assisted reproductive technologies at a later point.

The procedure for obtaining sperm can be non-invasive, such as via masturbation at a clinic. However, testicular sperm aspiration or surgical procedures could be performed for more complicated cases.

Egg Freezing

A similar egg-freezing procedure for women is known as oocyte cryopreservation. Compared to its male counterpart, this can be a slightly more invasive procedure. With the help of an ultrasound, a needle is inserted into the ovaries, and eggs are extracted. The doctor may opt for an abdominal incision if the ultrasound does not provide sufficient visibility.

Embryo Freezing

Embryo freezing is often done after undergoing reproductive treatments such as IVF (In-Vitro Fertilisation) or ICSI (Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection), which can result in multiple embryos being produced. However, the couple may choose to have only one child at that time, and it is thus an option for them to freeze the remaining embryos so that the entire reproductive procedure does not have to be repeated later.
